The inflammatory cycle is often treated with a “band‐aid” type approach to quell immediate pain. However it is inflammation as a lingering, rather than an acute process that is increasingly attracting attention. It is considered as the root‐cause of many diseases that remain poorly understood or treated. Cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of mortality in the world, is no longer considered a disorder of lipid accumulation, but rather a disease process characterized by low‐grade inflammation of the vascular lining (endothelial cells) and an inappropriate wound healing response' of the blood vessels. Cancer is another chronic degenerative disease that is initiated and promoted by lingering inflammation often triggered by environmental or nutritional factors, i.e. carcinogen. Similarly, the devastating neurodegenerative disorder, Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is hypothesized as being caused by dysfunction of the immune system reacting to chronic inflammation of the central nervous system.
